The Grid Review: making document analysis easier with AI

In the legal industry, dealing with huge amounts of text-heavy documents is not uncommon. Going through all this information manually takes a lot of time and effort. This is where Saga’s "Grid Review" can be extremely helpful. Grid Review is a functionality that uses AI to answer questions on a big set of documents in parallel. This system uses Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) to make AI responses more accurate.

Grid Review is a way of using AI to pull out and examine key information from documents. Normally, professionals such as lawyers or compliance officers have to go through documents such as contracts, agreements, or letters by hand. This can be slow and lead to mistakes. With Grid Review, AI does the heavy lifting by answering a variety of questions on multiple documents at the same time.

Extraction and generation:

A big part of Grid Review is understanding the difference between two types of tasks: extraction and generation.

  • Extraction tasks focus on finding specific facts in a document that have a clear correct answer. For example, when reviewing contracts, professionals might want to pull out details like contract value, deadline dates, or termination fees. Since there is an objective right or wrong response, the answers to these questions are easy to evaluate.
  • Generation tasks are different because they require AI to create a response rather than simply pulling out information. These tasks do not have a single ground truth answer and responses are on a spectrum on how well they answer a question. For example, if AI is asked to summarize a contract's key risks, a certain phrasing can be a little more correct than another. Because of this, evaluating AI's accuracy in generation tasks is more complex compared to extraction tasks.

For me as a model developer, the distinction between these tasks is very important in evaluating the AI's accuracy, which helps to improve the model. For legal professionals on the other hand, understanding these tasks can greatly improve their experience with AI.

The future of Grid Review

Grid Review is changing the way we can handle documents, making it faster, more accurate, and (most importantly) less frustrating. Instead of spending hours digging through contracts or reports, professionals can trust AI to extract the facts and generate the information they need.

By taking care of the repetitive and time-consuming tasks, the Grid Review allows professionals to focus on interpretation and decision-making. As this technology improves, it will only get better at tackling more and more complex documents, making life easier for anyone who deals with a large volume of information.
